Cricketers’ power play

EK club representatives take part in international conference

- Mark Pirie

East Kilbride Cricket Club had the chance to renew a friendly rivalry – as well as rubbing shoulders with some of the big players in cricket.

EKCC president David Healy and member Brian Kampman were i nvited by East Kilbr i de M S P L i n d a Fa b i a n i t o t h e International Cricket Conference last month.

Brian from the club added that they were brought in to help the MSP with t heir knowledge of cricket as federations from across the globe met to discuss the rules and regulations of the sport.

The meeting saw delegates f r o m I n d i a t o O ma n , f r o m Thailand to Holland attending, but it was the representatives from Denmark that most interested the East Kilbride club.

The town club regularly competed with rivals in Ballerup throughout the 1960s and 70s, as part of a move from the Twinning Association in town.

Brian said that the Denmark officials had discussed the link between the two countries and even discussed facing off against the Ballerup club again.

He told the News: “We did talk about it and it would be good to organise s omething l i ke t hat through the associations.

“In recent years it hasn’t been possible due to financial constraints.

“But it was good to remember the link and hopefully we can build connections with them and other associations from overseas in the future.”

The EK club representative also enjoyed meeting with some of the top representatives in the cricketing world.

He added: “It was interesting to hear the game discussed and find out what changes are being talked about.

“There are nations you wouldn’t associate with cricket right away, and it was good to meet with them.

“I t wa s t h e f i r s t t i me t h i s meeting was held away f rom the Test playing countries and I enjoyed playing my part.”

EK MSP Linda Fabiani was full of praise for the pair.

She said: “It was a pleasure to co-host the International Cricket Confere nce re c e pt i on i n t he Scottish Parliament last week, br i nging t ogether al l cr i cketplaying nations of the world – a symbolic event since it is the first time it has taken place away from Test playing countries.

“It was great t o have l ocals David Healy and Brian Kampman there to participate, in what are exciting times for the future of the game.”
