Police assault denied

Pair set for trial

- Court reporter

A teenager has appeared in court charged with assaulting four police officers in East Kilbride.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stood in the dock at Hamilton Sheriff Court and denied a total of nine charges against him.

The offences are alleged to have taken place in the car park area of Hairmyres Hospital and in the nearby Eaglesham Road on July 9.

The youth, from Wishaw, denied behaving in a threatening manner likely to cause fear and alarm at the hospital by engaging in a stand-up fight and wilfully damaging property belonging to another by damaging two vehicles in the hospital car park.

The teen is also accused of shouting, swearing and acting aggressively at the hospital.

It is also alleged that the 17-year-old struggled with police officers in Eaglesham Road and that he assaulted PC Emma Christie by repeatedly punching and kicking her on the body.

The teen denied a further three charges relating to assaulting police officers.

These were that he spat on PC Alistair McIndewar and attempted to headbutt him; assaulting PC Mark Duncan by punching and kicking him on the body as well as spitting at him and punching and kicking PC David Fleming.

His co-accused, a 17-year-old from Blantyre, also denied engaging in a stand-up fight, behaving in a threatening manner and assaulting two police officers.

Both teens were bailed but will be subject to curfews.

The pair are set to stand trial on September 19.
