Ramblers with an appetite for Arran

-

Arran was the setting for St Leonards Rambling Club’s latest walks .. and their annual barbecue.

Both high and low walkers hit the ground running, as it were, by starting their walks at the pier immediately on disembarking from the ferry.

The high walkers were set on walking over the Claughland Hills, just south of Brodick, which rise to some 800 feet.

The route was a mixture of open ground and woodlands, initially along the coast before cutting inland.

Usually, this route would have afforded fine views, but the weather, with a mix of light rain and low-lying mist, obscured the view. However, it was a reasonable walking day and an interesting route.

The descent from the hills took the group down and across the main road from Brodick to Lamlash. From there, they followed the Fairy Glen back to Brodick, covering eight miles in total.

The low walkers stayed on lower ground, though the route had them climbing through woods which led them into the Fairy Glen. They then struck east through Glen Cloy and followed the river on its way back to the Firth of Clyde just outside Brodick, walking a total of seven miles.

The coach was waiting to take both groups along to the village hall at Sannox for the barbecue.

Their travelling chefs had the burgers ready by the time the hungry ramblers arrived.

The food was thoroughly enjoyed and there was time for some communal singing before the ramblers set off to catch the 7.30pm ferry back to Ardrossan and thence home.
