Group witness historic day in the Commons
On the day that Prime Minister David Cameron resigned, East Kilbride Minister Rev John Brewster and his party of international Chevening Scholars were present in the House of Commons gallery, thanks to previous arrangements with local MP Lisa Cameron.
Rev Brewster said: “It was an unexpected surprise and privilege to be there on this historic day. We also witnessed the debate on the Chilcot Report about the Iraq War.
“I observed that our MPs’ days are almost entirely lived and worked within the walls of Westminster, attending to the business of the House as well as to committee meetings and lobbying groups.
The Chevening Scholars from the University of Glasgow had earlier been honoured at a Government-sponsored reception in Alexandra Palace, and Waqar Syed reflected that: “The fate of my entire country of Pakistan was decided in this Chamber.”
Rev Brewster, minister at Greenhills Parish Church, also enjoyed a special personal visit to the St Mary Undercroft Chapel below Westminster Hall.
And after the group visited the House of Lords, Rev Brewster had a much appreciated cup of tea with Lisa Cameron on the Commons Terrace beside the River Thames.
By the time the sun went down on the London Eye, the Parliament had a new Prime Minister, Theresa May.
