Beauty queen’s cash for hospice

Strathaven student backs St Andrews

- Mark Pirie

A Strathaven beauty queen had fundraising down to a T when she boosted St Andrew’s Hospice coffers by a fantastic £1975.

Recently crowned Miss Intercontinental Scotland, Abigail Gliksten, held a ‘Wonderland Tea Party’ in Strathaven Scout and Guide Hall.

The ‘mad hatter’ guests came with their finest headgear and enjoyed a fabulous afternoon tea, as well as taking part raffle.

And the 23-year-old, who acts as an ambassador for the hospice, visited the Lanarkshire charity to donate the money that will go towards their Capital Appeal refurbishment project.

Abigail, who is studying dentistry at Dundee University said: “St Andrew’s Hospice is a fantastic local charity offering vital care and support to families from across Lanarkshire.

Abigail who won the title at a pageant earlier this month added: “As part of the competition we were judged on three rounds which included interview, swimwear and evening gown as well as some fun activities throughout the weekend.

“The swimwear and evening gown sections were particularly challenging for me as I normally run around in trainers and flat shoes, however, the interview round was a bit more natural as I have had many interviews in order to be able to study for my degree.

“As part of the pageant, I organised a charity exercise marathon and my Wonderland Tea Party for my chosen charities Over The Wall and the St Andrew’s Hospice Capital Appeal and in total raised £3000.

Abigail will now compete for the Miss International crown against contestants from across the globe at the finals in Sri Lanka.

Her fundraiser was part of the St Andrew’s Hospice Capital Appeal Pearl Tea Party Campaign, which is helping to raise funds for the facility’s refurbishment during its 30th anniversary.

Louise Arthur, the capital appeal major donor and trusts manager, said: “The campaign will run all through the summer until the end of August so there is still time to hold your own tea party.
