Six weeks of work to take place on town centre road

-

Work on a gas network in Strathaven began last week bringing the central road through the town to a standstill.

Access to Townhead Street is currently limited as gas distribution network company SGN upgrade the gas network- which will take up to six weeks. Colinhill Road will also be closed for the majority of the work, which started on Monday, July 18, and temporary traffic lights are now in use.

Following completion of the work, there will also be an additional two days of diversions from the Kirk Street A71 roundabout to the junction of Townhead Street with Colinhill Road.

The work involves replacing metal gas mains with new plastic pipe, which has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.

SGN state that they will work with South Lanarkshire Council during the course of this project.

SGN team manager Martyn Gray apologised for any delays as a result of the work

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by our work,”said Mr Gray.

“We understand roadworks can be frustrating and would like to thank road users and the local community for their patience while we complete our essential upgrade work.

“We are aware Townhead Street is a busy route in Strathaven and I would like to reassure everyone that we will be working hard to complete our work as soon as possible.”

Maps of the work area and diversion routes can be found online.
