7 tonnes of rubbish goes up in smoke

Emergency services rushed to Peel Park yesterday (Tuesday) after SEVEN tonnes of rubbish went up in flames on a busy road.

A commercial waste vehicle shed its hefty load of cardboard and other waste materials on Redwood Crescent in Peel Park Industrial Estate shortly after 7am causing chaos for drivers.

Police were called to redirect traffic while firefighte­rs extinguish­ed the blaze and the road was partially shut while the debris was cleaned up.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said:“Shortly after 7am we received a 999 call involving a lorry being on fire in Redwood Crescent.

“Two fire crews were immediatel­y scrambled. On arrival they discovered a large quantity of rubbish on fire in the middle of the road.

“Firefighte­rs used two high-powered jets to extinguish the flames which involved seven tonnes of cardboard and other materials.

“The assistance of police was required to control traffic and ensure the publics’safety.

“No one was hurt in the incident and fire fighters left shortly after 8am.”

East Kilbride Inspector Andrew MacDonald said: “We attended a lorry fire at Redwood Crescent and assisted the fire service and also set up traffic controls in the area while the flame were extinguish­ed to ensure the safety of the public.”
