- Nicola Findlay

Police are on the hunt for a vicious thug who attacked an OAP on a bus, leaving him with a serious eye injury.

The 74-year-old man was travelling on a First bus 201 service between Hamilton and East Kilbride just after 5pm on Saturday.

As the bus approached a stop near to the Murray Owen Centre on Murray Road, the elderly man was repeatedly punched by another man.

The attacker then left the bus along with another man and they were last seen on Owen Avenue.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after being alerted by the driver of the bus and the elderly man was taken to Hairmyres Hospital where he is currently being treated for a serious eye injury.

The suspect is described by police as in his 30s, of a medium build with black spiked hair.

He was wearing dark rimmed glasses, a blue polo shirt and dark jeans.

He was with another man who is described as being in his 50s with short greying hair.

Detective Constable Brian Crawford at Cambuslang CID said: “This was a very nasty attack on an elderly man which has left him with a serious eye injury.

“I urge anyone who was travelling on the bus and witnessed the assault to contact police immediately.

“I’d also like to speak to anyone who was travelling on the bus and knows where the elderly man or the suspect and his friend got on the bus.”

A First Glasgow spokesman said: “We are working with Police Scotland to try and identify the assailant and would urge anyone with any information to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cambuslang CID via 101.
