Woman was distraught after row erupted

- Nicola Findlay

A jealous ex threatened to murder his on-off girlfriend and her new partner – Hamilton Sheriff Court heard.

Jamie Thom (30) appeared from custody in Glenochil Prison on Friday.

He had been facing charges of abducting his ex-girlfriend while brandishing a weapon but not guilty pleas to these charges were accepted by the Crown.

The 30-year-old admitted breaching bail by entering Gordon Drive in Calderwood on March 3 and being in the company of his ex.

He went on to plead guilty to showing the woman ammunition and threatening to kill her and another on April 14 at Bruce Place in The Murray.

And Thom admitted being in possession of two modified brass cartridges on the same date.

Fiscal depute Michael McIntosh told the court: “At about 11pm on the date libelled the accused spoke to the complainer on the telephone.

“They were on and off partners for a number of years.

“In the evening in question the accused invited the complainer to the locus to discuss their relationship.

“The complainer made her way into the living room where she observed two bullets, an inch in length and the accused took hold of them.

“Some time later their conversation became argumentative and the complainer went to leave the locus.”

The fiscal went on: “The accused began shouting and swearing and making threats towards her, in particular saying ‘when I find out who you are seeing I am going to murder him and then I will murder you’.

“The complainer was distraught and was crying but ultimately made her own way from the property.

“Police were informed and an investigation began.

“After carrying out a search police found the bullets and the accused was detained.

“He accepted being in possession of the bullets but insisted they had been posted through his letterbox in the early hours of the morning.”

Thom’s defence lawyer told the court his client and the accused had an extremely tempestuous relationship and despite seeing other people they had been “drawn back to each other”.

The lawyer said during the periods they were seeing other people this sparked a great deal of jealously.

He added that Thom had been extremely concerned and upset that the bullets had been posted through is door and he turned to the person he was closest to but events took an “unfortunate turn”.

Thom’s younger brother Paul was jailed for four-and-a-half years in May for a catalogue of domestic abuse against three former partners over a nine year period.

The case was adjourned until August 26 for reports. Thom was remanded in custody meantime.
