Testing times as centre shuts

- Mark Pirie

East Kilbride driving test centre officially closed its doors last week but the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency are adamant they are looking for alternative areas.

The test centre ceased operations from Halfords store at Kingsgate Retail Park last Thursday, but the DVSA insisted that they were still looking for another site.

The East Kilbride centre, which was open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, officially shut its doors on July 28.

DVSA head of operations, Phil Lloyd, stated that they are committed to continue testing in the East Kilbride area and will advise local instructors as soon as there are any updates.

For now, learner drivers will have to use test sites such as Hamilton, Glasgow (Baillieston), Airdrie or Bishopbriggs.

Phil Lloyd reiterated his commitment to having a test centre in East Kilbride, saying: “DVSA is committed to meeting the needs and expectations of our customers by providing a local practical driving test service wherever possible.

“Halfords is bringing its partnership with DVSA to offer driving tests from five of their retail sites to an end from July.

“DVSA will contact candidates and driving instructors in these areas to inform them of any alternative arrangements.”

Following the closure, MP Lisa Cameron slammed the DVSA for not finding a local alternative.

She said:“It’s simply unacceptable that the DVSA have allowed this site to close without ensuring a replacement is identified.

“I had been assured that they were committed to sourcing a point of service in East Kilbride, and given the size of our town we surely deserve a local, permanent, full-time centre.

“Waiting times of over four months at the nearest test centres are simply intolerable, and costs learner drivers huge amounts in additional lessons to maintain their skills and affects pass rates.

“I will continue to press the DVSA to commit to East Kilbride and ensure our learner drivers are not left behind.”

The part-time test centre closed with one of Scotland’s poorest pass rates, showing that just 42 per cent of wouldbe drivers passed in town, making it the third bottom Scottish centre.
