TREE help protect plants in village

- Mark Pirie

Residents in Eaglesham are delighted after moves were made to protect the flowers in the village.

The Regeneration of Eaglesham’s Environment (TREE) have been fighting for bollards to be placed around the flower bed near Polnoon Street and Montgomery Street - after cars clipped the newly bedded plants in previous years.

It is hoped that the flowers will be preserved thanks to the safety measures put in by East Renfrewshire Council.

The group are now looking ahead to a busy summer, with plans to introduce benches in the town as well as repairing some planters damaged earlier this year at the Eglinton Arms - which saw costly plants stolen.

Dodie Mitchell from TREE told the News: “We did ask for bollards as traffic was cutting the corner, and we have also planted wild flower seeds which should be giving a good show in a few weeks.

“We have also ordered two new benches for the Orry with money from AOE windfarm fund.”

Every year the group fill the planters around the village with new and bright flowers.

The planters were donated by the council and were scrubbed and repainted by TREE volunteers - and have once again been filled for the summer.

They also conduct weeding and tidy up days around the village, in particular around the bus stops.

It has been a frustrating summer so far for the group after the planters were damaged, and they were unable to secure funding from the Whitelee Windfarm.
