EK champs take pool by storm

Coach hails Scottish championship winners

East Kilbride Amateur Swimming Club athletes had a fantastic showing at the recent Scottish National Open Championships at Tollcross recently.

Swimming as part of the South Lanarkshire squad they returned to the scene of their Age Groups triumph earlier in the year determined to keep up the good work. Typically, they did not disappoint. East Kilbride ASC stars picked up two Scottish National titles, and a staggering 15 Scottish Junior titles on their way to third place overall in the team points table, behind only the elite programmes of Edinburgh University and University of Stirling.

Angus Barr became the Scottish National Champion in the 200m and 800m Freestyle events against a very strong field.

He also came a highly creditable 4th in the 1500m Freestyle, with John Wright having a good showing with 7th and 8th in the 1500m Freestyle and 800m

Meg Finnon collected the bronze medal in the 1500m Freestyle with a powerful swim.

Nikki Miller was hot on her heels taking 4th place and the Scottish Junior title, while Kate Saxon took 8th place.

Meg was 4th overall in the 800m Freestyle, and made the finals of the 200m Butterfly and 400m Freestyle coming 9th and 10th, respectively.

Jennifer King came a fantastic 6th overall in the 400m Individual Medley and Lucy Ross 8th in the 50m Breaststroke.

Scott Gibson and Nikki Miller had an extraordinary few days.

As well as her 1500m Freestyle Champions success Nikki clocked up Scottish Junior titles in the 200m, 400m, 800m Freestyle, 400m Individual Medley and 200m Butterfly.

Scott, not to be outdone, took the Scottish Junior titles in the 50m, 100m, 200m Freestyle and 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke events.

Remarkably, the club has never had a men’s 100m Backstroke star swim under 60 seconds in its 40 year history until both Angus Barr and Scott Gibson achieved just that feat in this same meet.

Andrew MacIntosh became Scottish Junior Champion in the 200m Breaststroke and the Junior Boys squads in the 4 x100m Medley Relay (Scott Gibson, Andrew MacIntosh, Keir Buchanan plus Mitchell Stevenson (Lanark).

And 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay (Keir Buchanan, Jonathan Christie, Dylan Sommerville, Scott Gibson) took the Scottish Junior Champions titles, too.

South Lanarkshire and East Kilbride head coach Andy Figgins expressed his delight with his swimmers’ performances.

He said: “Once again I’m absolutely thrilled with the achievements of our swimmers.

“We continue to punch well above our weight at senior performance level.

“I’m particularly thrilled that we were third in the top team competition, with only two of Scotland’s four performance centres ahead of us.”
