What do you think of the jobs scene in EK?

Demolition work at Rolls-Royce factory

- Mark Pirie

Last week saw the diggers move in to the former Rolls-Royce plant in EK as demolition work continues.

The plant shut its doors at the end of last year, and with the Müller plant closing its doors and retailers like BHS leaving the high street, we took to the streets to see what the public thought of the changing landscape in town.

Mark Wilson (47), from West Mains, is currently looking for a job, and has been sad to see all of the industries leave town.

He told the News: “It’s not easy out there. I’m hoping to do something in music, but it’s a competitive industry. “There isn’t as much work out there. “You always associate Rolls-Royce with EK and now it’s gone.”

Frances Thomson (63), also from West Mains, added: “It must be hard for people to find jobs with all of the closures.”

Nerston mum Laura Lannon (32), who was with one-year-old daughter Grace, said: “Places like BHS have been there since I was young.

“People will have worked there for their whole lives– it’s such a shame.”

Massimo Eneide (20), from West Mains, recently got a new job, but knows that opportunities can be limited.

He said: “I know people were devastated when they saw Rolls-Royce go. There are less and less jobs.”
