Keep your property secure

-

This week we have received reports of thefts from garages and outbuildings in East Kilbride and Strathaven, writes Chief Inspector Gillian Scott.

Items that are kept in garden sheds and garages are attractive to thieves as they are not usually marked and can be easily sold on for cash.

It’s important that you take all measures possible to secure your property.

It is not unusual to see an increase in this type of crime during the summer months as the articles that are stolen are more in demand for resale during this time.

Ensure that your garden gates are locked and in a good state of repair to prevent easy access into your garden.

Security lighting around your property will act as a deterrent.

Consider dusk to dawn low voltage lighting which is cost effective to both install and run.

Please make sure that your wheelie bins are located in an area which doesn’t allow for them to be used as an easy step to climb on to or to get over fences or walls and ensure that they don’t give easy access to windows.

Hedges which surround your property should be kept low and tidy to allow for natural surveillance and to make it difficult for an intruder to gain access without being seen.

For more information on how to secure your property please visit the Police Scotland Website or pop into East Kilbride Police Office and speak with a local officer.

On Saturday, August 13 between noon and 4pm Lanarkshire Division are hosting an Open Day at Motherwell Police Office.

I was at last year’s event which was attended by over 2000 people.

It was a great day and fun was had by all.
