Pupils a class act as they celebrate fantastic results

- Nicola Findlay

The agonising wait was over for hundreds of pupils across East Kilbride yesterday (Tuesday).

Schools in the town and in Strathaven say all their pupils’ hard work paid off with excellent results across the board.

It proved a bumper year with a record number of pupils gaining five Highers and improved results at National 4 and 5 levels.

Liz White, head teacher at Calderglen High told the News: “Staff and pupils at Calderglen are celebrating continued improvements in their results.

“We have our highest number of pupils gaining 5 Highers and a record number of pupils gaining 5 As.

“We are delighted with an improved number of Higher passes overall for our pupils.

“A record number of pupils have also received an SQA Group Award for personal development and some for volunteering, in addition to their national qualifications.

“Our pupils sitting National 5 continue to meet with success and we have further increased the number of passes at National 4, helping the school in its quest to narrow the attainment gap.

“These results will enable our pupils to secure very positive pathways for further study, training, apprenticeships and employment.

“Some of our new subjects, such as photography, music, technology and media have achieved outstanding results with photography, music and technology enjoying a 100 per cent pass rate.”

Meanwhile St Andrew’s and St Bride’s also excelled and head, Fiona Mullen, said: “I would like to congratulate the pupils of St Andrew’s and St Bride’s for their outstanding results again this year, at every level of presentation.

“From the group of students presented, 100 per cent of fourth year pupils achieved the equivalent of at least three National 4 awards; 63 per cent achieved five or more National 5 qualifications, with 24 pupils amassing eight A grade passes; 63 per cent of fifth year students gained three or more Higher passes; 33 per cent of the year group accomplished five Higher passes, 18 of whom achieved five A grade awards and a total of 96 Advanced Higher passes were secured to add to the many qualifications S6 have already accomplished.”

She added: “This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work and commitment of our students, the constant help and encouragement of parents and carers, the unceasing spiritual support of our local parishes, as well as the professionalism and dedication of staff not only in St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School but across the whole learning community.

“Year on year we are strengthening our success, helping our students to become more confident, better equipped and competitive for securing jobs and gaining places in Further and Higher Education.”

And head teacher at Duncanrig , George Wynne, was equally delighted with his pupils achievements this exam season.

“I am extremely pleased with this year’s results – it really is a cracking set of results with improvements across the board,” he said.

“Duncanrig Secondary – along with all the other high schools in the town – has continued to improve year on year and are producing good results.”

He added: “It is testament to all the hard work of pupils themselves who can be extremely proud of all their hard work and the teachers and staff who support them.”
