Hairmyres misses its A&E waiting targets

- Mark Pirie

An MSP has called for more resources to be put into the NHS after Hairmyres Hospital missed its A&E waiting time target by 0.8 per cent.

Central Scotland list MSP and EK West councillor Graham Simpson has called for action after statistics showed that 94.2 per cent of patients were seen within the four hour target in June.

Despite improvements at Hairmyres, the hospital fell below the national average, which show 95.7 per cent of patients were seen within four hours.

A total of 23 patients were waiting in Haimryres A&E for over eight hours.

In the previous month, the figures show that 93.8 per cent of patients were seen within four hours – below the Scottish Government target of 95 per cent.

In May, 25 patients waited for more that eight hours, and one patient waited over 12 hours.

The Tory MSP said: “Any improvement in figures is to be welcomed but they are still below target. We need to see far more resources put into the NHS by the SNP. They have underfunded Scotland’s health service compared to south of the border.

“Instead of constant constitutional carping Nicola Sturgeon should be getting on with the day job and start delivering real progress in health and other public services.”

East Kilbride MSP Linda Fabiani was more positive about the figures, noting the year-on-year improvement.

“Recent figures show our A&E departments are continuing to build upon improvements made in the past year, with our national performance better than elsewhere in the UK for the last 15 months. Hairmyres has improved upon last year’s figures, which is welcome news.”

Heather Knox, NHS Lanarkshire Director of Acute Services, added: “We have seen an overall improvement in our unscheduled care performance compared with last year. Our clinical and managerial staff will continue to work together to enhance our performance and to reduce waiting times for our patients.”
