SADDLE UP FOR THE CYCLE 50

- Mark Pirie

Time is running out to get on your bike for a huge charity cycle around the Strathaven and the districts.

On Sunday, August 21, hundreds of cyclists will fill the quiet roads of Avondale for the annual Round Strathaven 50 (RS50).

Around 600 cyclists have signed up, so far, and organisers say that entry is approaching capacity but there is time yet to add your name to the list.

The RS50 has become a firm fixture on the calendar for cyclists at all levels, with a challenging 50 mile route enjoyed by club cyclists.

It is also fun for the mass ride, creating a happy atmosphere as the cyclists wind their way through the villages of the Avondale countryside.

There is also a family-friendly 15-mile run starting later in the day.

The events have raised thousands of pounds for various charities and this year plan to do the same.

Organisers, Friends of Strathaven Scouts, have raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities, both at home and abroad.

The local Scout and Guide troops will again benefit from the efforts this year.

In addition, the organisers are committed to assisting with a school refurbishment project in India, in conjunction with Health Help International.

Other local facilities are also in their sights.

The 2016 event will be waved off by Strathaven’s Gala Queen Carly Redmond-White, with her Champion, William McVeigh.

There will be an army of home bakers at the ready, charged with the massive task of keeping hundreds of hungry cyclists energised through the day.

Further information can be obtained from Ian Gow on 01357 522118 and to book head over to Entry Central (www. entrycentral.com/ roundstrathaven50).

If you wish to volunteer to help organise the event and parking contact Colin on 01357 523535.

If you would like to help with home baking contact Bibby on 01357 522875.

In addition donations can be accepted on the morning, handed in at Kirkland Park School for early distribution around the course.
