- Mark Pirie

A popular butcher is set to enjoy his retirement after proving to be a cut above for over five decades.

George Dodds (65), from East Mains, will hang up his butcher’s knife and apron for the final time this Saturday after 51 years at Wrights the Butchers in the Village.

He was presented with a watch by owner Stephen Sheriff to mark his years of service as he prepares to enjoy his retirement.

George has worked at the awardwinning butchers since leaving school at the age of 14, only taking a brief time out when he travelled to South Africa.

He admitted he was sad to be leaving behind the shop but felt it was right for him.

“I think it’s time for me to go – they can get some young blood in.

“If I didn’t go now, I don’t know when I would, so it feels like a good choice.

“I’ve really enjoyed working here with Stephen and thoroughly enjoyed being here for so long.

“The customers I’ve spoken to have said they will be sad to see me go but I think the time is right.”

George worked under original owners, the Wright brothers, before Stephen took over the shop in 1996.

Stephen said that George was great with customers and was known for his wit

“It’ll be a blow for us to lose someone with such great experience,” he added.

“It’s an amazing length of time to serve the business – he left school and has been here ever since.

“He is a local boy and during my time here has always done us proud.

“He is very reliable and has a dry sense of humour.

“George has been great to work with and I just want to thank him for helping me in my time here and wish him all the best.”
