Recycling award is in the can for footie club

- Louise Reilly

East Kilbride Football Club have netted a special award in recognition of their recycling and fundraising achievements.

The club have raised vital funds for local and international charities through recycling empty drinks cans over the past four years.

And last week they received a Green Can Award from recycling programme Every Can Counts after raising over £3000 after recycling over 15 tonnes of empty drinks cans.

The money made through recycling goes directly to the club’s charity outreach programmes, which includes paying for essential football coaching at the club, donations to town charities and Fishes food charity and to support Project Gambia,a Scottish-based charity supporting over 250 deaf Gambian children by providing them with food and resources.

EKFC coach Mike Peden, who created the club’s recycling and outreach programmes, said: “The Every Can Green Can Award is a fantastic achievement for the hard work the club has carried out of the last few years.

“The recycling scheme has really worked to not only encourage our players and club visitors to think about the importance of recycling, but to also raise money for fantastic causes.

“This includes funding sports equipment and training for youngsters here in the local area and also in Gambia.”

The club plan to expand donations to more local charities in coming months.

The club use LAMH Recycle ltd for processing whose CEO Anita Boyle has been hugely supportive.

Jonathan Easthope, brand manager for Every Can Counts, said: “This award highlights the great work that EKFC are doing by raising awareness of recycling and helping make Scotland a zero waste society.

“We’re really proud of all their efforts.”
