BHS closes down

Tributes to BHS staff in East Kilbride were posted on social media as the store abruptly closed.

Forty members of staff clocked off for the last time on Saturday, August 6 as the shop was locked up - but enjoyed a final meet up the following Monday.

Fi Stewart couldn’t believe what had happened to the store:“Shocking that this is happening in these times .”

Former employee Marie Brogan commented:“I worked in the East Kilbride branch at the fruit counter way back in 1978.

“So sad to see it closed, hope all the staff find other jobs.”

Anne Weir-Mcgregor, who also has a connection to the store, added: “Unbelievable, many years ago when BHS had its food section my older sister Joan was the food supervisor.

“I feel so sorry for all that have lost their jobs.

“I wish you all well for your future.” Shirley Conway also paid tribute to the iconic shop:“This was my first Sat job with a group of my friends from Hunter High School.

“Worked on the food then lighting - so sad to see it close and workers lose their jobs.”

“Hope staff find employment. Wish all good luck.”

The demolition of Rolls-Royce stirred happy and sad memories for many East Kilbride residents on social media last week.

The iconic building which was once synonymous with the town was torn down after the aerospace giant moved its operations to Inchinnan.

Karen Scott has fond memories of ‘Rolly’: “All of the men in my family once worked in the Rolls-Royce!

“Sad to see how much has been lost in East Kilbride!

“It has no feeling of a community nowadays!”

James Gillespie, a former member of the team at Rolls-Royce, added:“Can remember coming off nightshift, walking along Old Coach Rd.

“There would be loads of people going to work on day-shift that you would nod to or say‘hi!’to.

“Then one morning I realised there was only a few walking to work. “Felt eerie to say the least!” Gus Macdonald added:“East Kilbride will never be the same without the Rolly.”
