JAGS’ KEY MEN

-

As East KilbrideThistle embark on their new league campaign, we run the rule over the players who could prove pivotal.

Chris Treacy, Goalkeeper

A top shot-stopper at this level, the Jags number one saved them on countless occasions and he was often the difference between winning and losing last term.

A 5-2 victory away to Gartcairn in November was his stand-out performance as he saved a penalty and then made four vital stops in the game to make sure Thistle took the points.

If Thistle are to push for promotion they’ll need Treacy to repeat that kind of form. He may have only kept three clean sheets last season and although the Jags conceded 74 goals in 32 matches across all competitions, Thistle fans will tell you those figures would have been much higher if not for his performances between the sticks.

Alan McFadden, Midfielder

Just back from an Achilles injury, the Jags skipper is a seasoned campaigner at this level and Thistle will rely on his experience to guide the crop of young players in the squad.

Having missed pre-season, it may take him a bit of time to get up to speed but Billy Campbell knows he can rely on the former Cambuslang Rangers man to orchestrate the midfield.

Goals from the middle of the park was a strong attribute of Thistle’s performances last season and McFadden notched 11 of their 63 goals scored in all competitions.

Liam McLaughlin, Midfielder

A revelation last season, the Jags have done well to keep this young talent at the Showpark.

He only came into the squad from EK Thistle Amateurs midway through the campaign, but a scoring run of 11 goals in nine matches (eventually netting 14 goals in total) and a series of assists showed the 19-year-old has the ability to be Thistle’s lynchpin.

Boss Campbell will want – and need – a similar kind of return. McLaughlin’s quick feet and pace caused all sorts of problems for defences last season and he will be a crucial creative force.

Craig Hastings, Striker

His 19 goals for East Kilbride FC last season tells you Hastings has a nose for goal and his loan signing is a fine piece of business by Billy Campbell.

After losing top-scorer Craig Miles, the Jags needed a strong replacement and, in Hastings, they have delivered.

Technically strong, Hastings will also work his socks off for the team.

Having featured in the Scottish Cup last season he will bring good experience to the frontline and you can expect the penalty box predator to hit the ground running.

Despite signing a short-term deal until the end of December, Hasty has set himself an ambitious target of 20 goals. His manager would light up like a Christmas tree if he can produce that kind of return before the year is out.
