Sectional campaign ends with a whimper

-

Jags boss Billy Campbell offered no excuses for Saturday’s 6-0 hammering at Rutherglen Glencairn as a disappointing cup campaign came to an end.

East Kilbride Thistle went into the game on a high after recording their first and only win of the sectional cup last Wednesday night in a 4-3 win over Vale of Clyde. However, they came crashing back down to earth with a ruthless display from Glens, who topped the group.

Doubles from Marshall, McKay and Team did the damage for the Super Premier League side and Campbell said:“Each of the teams we’ve played in this section play in higher divisions, but that’s no excuse for this performance.

“We could and should have played better and it was night and day from our display against Vale.

“It was a bad day at the office, but there’s no excuses for making the wrong decisions all day.

“If three or four players have a bad day it’s going to be difficult, but when eight or nine don’t turn up you’ve got no chance.

“I take nothing away from Rutherglen because they played well and punished our mistakes.”

With league business getting underway on Saturday, Campbell is keen to put this behind him.

He added:“I kept the players in the dressing room for a while after the game and told them about our expectations for this season.

“But we won’t dwell on it. We have to push on and focus on the league.”
