... but new guide dog owner Rose (85) doesn’t mind as her pal steals the show TheHub isback intown

Rose Shields of East Kilbride is enjoying a new lease of life thanks to her new companion ... guide dog Nala.

As her eyesight worsened, Rose, who celebrates her 86th birthday next month, was becoming more and more housebound.

But since Nala came into her life, Rose is enjoying the new-found freedom and independence that two-year-old Nala has brought her.

Rose, from The Murray, qualified with Nala, who is her first guide dog, in May this year, proving that age really is just a number.

With faithful Labrador cross Golden Retriever, Nala at her side, Rose has been able to enjoy trips to Largs and Troon during the summer.

Rose said: “Now when I go shopping, it takes twice as long because people are always stopping me to ask about Nala and Guide Dogs.

“But I like that, I’ve met lots of people since I got Nala.”

“I’m so pleased that, at 85, Guide Dogs considered my application for a guide dog.

“I’ll always be grateful to fellow guide dog owner Chris Sinclair, who was the one to tell me there are no age limits, and that you don’t need to be completely blind to have a guide dog.”

Guide Dogs rely on donations to allow them to continue their life-changing work and help people like Rose.

Guide Dog Week, which is one of the charity’s biggest fundraisers, runs from October 1 to 9 and once again they are hoping for a great response.

Every pound raised makes a difference to people living with sight loss.

The theme for Guide Dog Week is Move Best friends it for Money.
