Three in a row for Alan

- Paul Thomson

Alan McNamee made it a hattrick of men’s singles titles at the East Kilbride Tennis Club Championships earlier this month.

The 18-year-old, who became the club’s youngest ever men’s champion when he lifted his first title in 2014, beat Luke Quigley in straight sets at Calderglen Sports Club on September 10 to win his third singles title.

This year he had a new opponent in the shape of Quigley who had beaten Cameron Laing, the man who lost the last two finals to McNamee, in the semi-finals.

In the first set Luke held his own but Alan proved too strong in the deciding tie break. After the close first set Alan took control winning the second set 6-2 to take the match 7-6, 6-2.

Unfortunately there was no ladies final this year as only one lady put herself forward for the draw.

But there was action in the ladies doubles with Aileen Morris and Lee Dunnachie cruising to victory over inexperienced couple Emma Hodge and Nicole Whyte, winning 6-0, 6-0.

In the Gents doubles final there was a three set battle with Colin Magee and Fergal Burns coming through against Kevan Lyons and Gerrard O’Neil in an exciting match.

This was O’Neil’s first final in his first season in the club and he performed well, helped by the experienced Lyons who used all his guile to make the match as close as possible.

However, Magee and Burns prevailed, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Finally, in the mixed doubles Kevan Lyons joined his wife Michelle in the final hoping to make up for his men’s doubles defeat – but their opponents had other ideas.

Connor Shephard and Connie Charkiewicz impressed to leave the Lyons disappointed, winning 6-3, 6-4.
