Plenty to talk about at the speakers’ club
Isobel Dunlop took charge of last week’s East Kilbride Speakers Club’s meeting.
The first speaker she introduced was Ken Murray whose speech titled Is Anyone Out There? questioned the likelihood of the existence of extraterrestrial intelligent life before reaching the conclusion that it probably does not.
Ross Hammond followed with a talk on the sombre fact that the social website Facebook contains the details of the lives of some thirty million people, posted by them and who have since died and the challenge this poses to their surviving families and their descendants.
Ewan McRobert then told of how a visit to the Glastonbury festival inspired him to study the meaning behind song lyrics and he gave intriguing and surprising examples of this in popular modern songs.
Finally, George Stevenson gave an informative and fascinating account of the totem poles carved and erected by Canadian Indian tribes.
He surprised everyone in the audience by saying they were of no religious significance but simply decorative with some tribal symbolism.
A challenging set of impromptu topics presented by David Webster were handled well by individual club members and an overall evaluation of the evening’s programme was delivered by Betty Sneddon.
The next meeting of the club is scheduled for tomorrow night (Thursday, October 6) and details can be obtained from secretary Paul Munday on 01355 223894.
