Think before you buy a brand new bunny

- Lorraine Howard

There are 1.2 million pet rabbits across the UK making them the fourth most popular pet after dogs, cats and fish.

They can make the most wonderful pets and are full of personality, however they are not as low maintenance as might be expected. Here are some tips from MedicAnimal, the UK’s leading online pet retailer, you must consider before purchasing your fluffy friends.

Andrew Bucher, Chief Veterinary Officer at MedicAnimal, commented, “It is important to promote the welfare of rabbits as many people see them as ‘easy’ pets that require little attention, which is far from the truth. Given time, attention and love bunnies are really fulfilling pets that have great little personalities”

Pairs Bunnies are social animals and need the company of other rabbits. Alone, bunnies can feel very isolated and sad just like humans so it is best to keep them in pairs, or more if you can! Male/female pairs work best and ideally should both be neutered as it is easier to bond these bunnies and you will prevent unwanted pregnancies! Consult your local rescue centre or vet for bonding information and help.

Space It’s recommended that your hutch should be no smaller than 6’x 2’ x 2’ for a single rabbit, so you have to consider whether you have the space to cater for two bunnies happily. They should be able to hop and stand on their back legs while inside their hutch. Additionally, the hutch should only be used as a shelter and not the only living space. The attached secure run should measure at least 8’x 6’ – but remember these are just the minimum requirements.

Expense While a rescue rabbit can cost around £40, it is important to think about the long-term costs of owning rabbits. According to the RSPCA, keeping a pair of outdoor rabbits for 10 years can cost around £16,000 when taking food, maintenance costs, cleaning products and toys into consideration. Playtime Rabbits should be let out of their cages for several hours every day. This will not only make them happy but it keeps them healthy too. You can interact with your bunnies or let them explore by themselves, but make sure you always keep an eye on them. While in their hutch, you should provide them with plenty to play with to keep them occupied. Cardboard boxes and loo roll tubes are cheap options that can provide hours of fun.
