Bogus workman charges

- with Chief Inspector Gillian Scott

About 4pm on Tuesday, October 4, a 33-year-old man attended at the home of a 75-year-old woman in Westwood.

He offered to clean the elderly woman’s driveway for £450 and she agreed.

At this time the woman’s daughter arrived at her house and was unsure about the legitimacy of the workman.

The workman was unable to provide details of the company he was working for or any details about his business.

The elderly woman’s daughter contacted police and local officers attended immediately.

On arrival at the woman’s address the police officers observed the man cleaning the driveway.

The police officers established that, because the workman had agreed the work that day and had begun to clear the driveway without allowing the female a cancellation period, he had committed an offence.

The man was charged with two offences and a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal.

I am pleased that the elderly woman’s daughter contacted us to raise her concerns, which allowed for officers to attend immediately.

We have received two other reports of bogus workmen in the East Kilbride area over the past two months but unfortunately this man does not match the description of the men involved in the other incidents.

On Wednesday, October 5, Inspector Andrew MacDonald and your safer communities officer attended the East Kilbride Crime Prevention Panel awards ceremony.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the event. However, I would like to congratulate the winners of the awards and thank the East Kilbride Crime Prevention Panel for all their hard work and commitment.

The East Kilbride Crime Prevention Panel has been operating for 50 years and we are so grateful for their continued efforts to reduce crime in our area.

The summer appears to be over and we have seen the start of the colder mornings.

Please do not leave your vehicle unattended if you have started the engine when trying to defrost your windows. This is the ideal opportunity for thieves to steal your car so don’t give them the chance.

There appears to be a craze sweeping the UK where pranksters are dressing up as clowns and scaring members of the public. There have been several incidents of this type reported in the South Lanarkshire area over the last week. These type of incidents cause fear and anxiety to our communities and will be treated very seriously by Police Scotland.
