Parking mad after fine

An East Kilbride mum has slammed car parking bosses after her daughter was fined for using an empty car park and received backing from social media users.

Fiona Lovatt told the News her daughter Alison (20) was shocked to be hit with a £100 fine after parking in the Queensway Retail Park last month, just after 11pm for a mere 25 minutes or so, and called for changes to be made.

John Carlin told Fiona to ignore the fine, adding: “Stick it in the bin and ignore any future correspondence or attempts at contacting you.”

Lyn Stewart had been fined before and appealed, but was still forced to pay.

She posted to Facebook: “We got one down south, appealed and lost.

“They said that mitigation was not grounds for appeal even though my husband had been taken ill.”

Stephanie Semple had also received a fine, but after ignoring it never had to pay the fine.

She said: “I had one of these parking tickets before.

“I didn’t pay it they sent a second letter i didn’t respond.

“Never heard a thing after that.”

Phone box cuts

A number of payphones could be cut in East Kilbride following a consultation by BT – but there was a mixed response online following news that the Westwood and The Murray payphones could be removed.

Mark McKerrell felt they could help, posting to Facebook: “Saved me many times when my battery dies on my mobile on my way home from a night out.”

Anne Jackson said she would not be sad to see them go, stating: “Get rid they are disgusting to walk past.”

Chris Gibson also felt they had their benefits: “Handy if you need to phone the emergency services.”

Jennifer Dutch hoped the youngster enjoyed the coverage

She commented on the EK News Facebook: “Well done Beth, clever girl, you are famous!”

Teresa Neill added: “Well done.”
