Ramblers enjoy stunning views

-

Duncanrig Ramblers headed to Perthshire for two walks near Aberfeldy at the weekend and got very lucky with the weather.

The alternate walk started at Logierait and tried to follow the old railway or what was left of it.

The group rambled up the Tay Valley trying to follow the old railway line and river paths. At the village of Grandtully, they had lunch at the old station, which is a canoe centre and campsite, famous in Scottish canoeing circles for the grade three Grandtully white water rapids canoeing run.

After Grandtully, the walkers joined onto the Rob Roy Way and the group meandered along close to the River Tay in the autumn sun on the way to Aberfeldy and waiting coach.

The high walk started at Camserney, which is close to Weem and Castle Menzies, formerly known as Weem Castle, where Bonnie Prince Charlie spent two nights on his way to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. One of Scotland’s best-preserved 16th-century castles, Castle Menzies is the seat of Clan Menzies. The walkers climbed up the hill through this cosy hamlet passing some interesting houses adjacent to the walk track.

They continued past the rushing waters of the Camserney Burn before entering a forest for about a mile before crossing open moorland which had great views over the Tay Valley. Before long the group reached the estate bothy, which is used for grouse shooting and also Highland safaris. From the bothy the ramblers travelled on to the shores of Loch Farleyer.

After leaving the loch, the group gradually descended, crossing over the Camserney Burn again into an open forest trail with stunning views as far as Loch Tay and down past Aberfeldy.

They then followed a path that wound its way down through the forest, reaching Carse Farm road end and the awaiting coach.

The ramblers enjoyed their social break in Aberfeldy.

The next walk, on the October 23, is in the Trossachs, with bookings being taken on October 17. Visitors Welcome.
