National campaign targets young drivers
Should more restrictions be in place?
An East Kilbride woman who suffered lifechanging injuries in a car crash is using her story to keep young drivers safe.
Laura Torrance has been a wheelchair user since 1999 when she was seriously injured in the car accident in the town aged just 16.
The 33-year-old, from Stewartfield, was recently guest speaker at a Streets Ahead Young Drivers event.
The News spoke to shoppers in East Kilbride town centre and asked whether there should be more restrictions in place for new drivers following the launch of a national road safety campaign.
Winnie Healey, from Westwood, said: “I think the age for getting your licence should be increased – a lot of young drivers just want to show off too much.”
Edith Duncan, from Greenhills, said: “I do think there should be more restrictions in place but getting the importance of road safety across should be for all drivers – you see them flying around the schemes putting wee ones and older folk at risk and it’s not just young drivers.”
Andrew Mack, from Westwood, said: “I think it’s unfair to tar all young people with the same brush. There are sensible ones out there. Maybe tougher fines for those caught breaking the law rather than targeted restrictions.”
Claire Mavers, from Greenhills, said: “It’s hard. I am a mum and safety is so important but not all young drivers are the same and I think it would be too problematic to put restrictions in place.”
