Popular taxi driver Brian dies

-

Tributes are being paid to a popular local cabbie who was laid to rest on Friday.

Dad-of-two Brian McEwan suffered a fatal heart attack on October 8 at his Calderwood home. He was just 52 years old. South Lanarkshire Crematorium was packed as dozens of family members and friends gathered to pay their respects to the EKCO taxi driver.

Brian, who previously worked as a doorman at the town’s former Crystals and Gemini nightclubs, had angina and had been receiving hospital treatment for heart problems.

However, despite his illness, the former Claremont High pupil’s sudden passing came as a huge shock to many.

Brian is survived by his mother Wilma (78) and sisters Liz Cunningham (58) and Linda Bell (57).

His brother, Donnie, passed away in 2004, aged 43.

Brian’s sister Linda told the News this week: “Brian’s death was a shock to us all, it was very sudden and unexpected.

“He was a lovable rogue, the baby of the family and very popular.

“He’ll be really missed by us all.”

She added: “Thank you to everyone who has been so kind to send nice cards and flowers.

“And thanks to Heritage Funeral Services who were so nice to us.”

Paying tribute to his former colleague, EKCO Taxis secretary, George McDonald, said: “Brian was a key member of the management committee at EKCO. “His ideas for the running of the firm were always appreciated and usually put into practice. Brian’s death was a shock to all of us. He will be sorely missed and will not be forgotten.”
