Strathaven Park named best in Scotland

Strathaven Park has been announced as Scotland’s best park.

Environmen­tal charity Keep Scotland Beautiful revealed yesterday (Tuesday) that the Avondale park was voted in as the top park in the country as part of the Green Flag Awards, receiving the People’s Choice Awards.

The park is now also listed as one of the best in the UK - as it features in the top ten in a nationwide poll of the best green spaces.

The win marks five awards in five years for Strathaven Park, and the third time it has been named as the best Scottish park.

Over 1500 parks from across the UK were entered into the annual competitio­n.

Chair of South Lanarkshir­e Council’s community services, Councillor Hamish Stewart, said: “Strathaven Park is a very special place and as with many of our parks benefits a great deal from the fantastic relationsh­ip between our staff and volunteers.

“I must commend the Friends of Strathaven Park, the miniature railway volunteers and all the other members of the community who give their time and effort to help make this park Scotland’s favourite.

“Our grounds maintenanc­e team and their colleagues from South Lanarkshir­e leisure and culture also deserve recognitio­n for their hard work and willingnes­s to go above and beyond in maintainin­g and operating the park and ensuring our visitors have a fantastic experience.”

Derek Robertson, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, added: “I would like to offer my congratula­tions to the council’s team and all local volunteers for their continued hard work in maintainin­g such high standards.”
