Great memories of lunch
Dear Editor
I was sorry to hear that the St Leonards Lunch Club for retired people has closed.
I understand this club has been operating for 40 years, with Mr Graeme Macklin and his wife Jean having run the club for about the last 20 years and their commitment in steering the club so ably for so long must be commended.
Every Friday the club members were treated to Jean’s delicious soup, followed by a choice of two lovely dinners, then tea or coffee and biscuits to finish and all for the price of only £5!
How the ladies managed to offer such high quality food at this price was a miracle but greatly appreciated by all those who attended.
I myself assisted in serving meals at the club for eight years and feel proud to have served as part of such a marvellous team of volunteers.
As I served the tables with their meals I would share a joke or two and although I don’t know how much the jokes were appreciated given that I had a captive audience, what I do know is that there was a lovely atmosphere and it is those laughs among friends as we shared our meal on Friday afternoons that will remain with me forever.
As well as the lunches on a Friday afternoon, the club also enjoyed an annual summer bus run and an annual Christmas lunch at the Bruce Hotel, which always proved a perfect way to end the year.
As the years came and went we sadly lost a few of our lovely lunch club friends, both staff volunteers and club members, but they will always be remembered fondly through the memories I hold so dearly of my afternoons spent at the St Leonards Lunch Club.
Best wishes and grateful thanks to all concerned. Murray and Anne Pollock Largs
