Have you had pothole problems in town?

More claims but less paid out to drivers

- Mark Pirie

The number of number of pothole compensation claims to South Lanarkshire Council have gone up by nearly 50 per cent in the last year.

However the amount paid out by South Lanarkshire actually dropped, leaving drivers counting the cost of the damage.

The News took to the streets to find out what the public think of the roads in East Kilbride.

EK shopper Robert McNeill thinks that there is room for improvement on the roads across the country to stop damage to cars.

He said: “Wherever you are you see the roads are wearing away at the side – everyone knows a bad bit. It makes you wonder what we pay our road tax for and what it goes to. “They should be doing a lot more.” Anne Lindsay from West Mains felt that there were other problems that should be addressed before potholes.

She said: “I have heard people talking about the potholes – but it was mostly last year. What I would like to see them do is make narrow roads wider around housing estates. It’s an accident waiting to happen.”

EK shopper Karen Dron described the standard of roads in the town as “disgraceful”, adding: “There needs to be a lot of work. Roads and pavements need to be laid again.”

However Patrica McGuire felt that the roads were fine, telling the News: “My husband drives and I know a lot of work has gone into repairs.”
