Fly-tipping sparks concern in town
Former pub site is now an eyesore
Strathaven Community Council have highlighted problems with fly-tipping at the heart of the town after empty land was left a mess.
The site of the former Castle Tavern pub has been left in disarray after a huge gap in the fence left the area open.
It is now covered in rubbish, with bottles, umbrellas and wood covering the site on Todshill Street, just outside the Common Green and near Strathaven Castle.
As well as this, weeds are overgrown and can be seen over the remaining fences.
The land has been empty since the pub was demolished in 2011.
A spokesperson for the community council said they would be contacting the agent for the site to express their concern.
The news follows reports of fly-tipping on the outskirts of the town near Glassford, with fridges and bricks abandoned on Muirkirk Road.
South Lanarkshire Council head of fleet and environmental services, Shirley Clelland, said: “The site is in private ownership and the council does not have a duty to keep it clear.
“Environmental Services have received no reports in relation to this site.”
Environmental Services issue fixed-penalty fines of £200 and report offenders to the Procurator Fiscal who may take further action.
