Brew-up for Barbara

-

An East Kilbride nursery held a Macmillan coffee morning in memory of a much-loved member of staff.

Barbara Stewart, who worked at the Kirktonholme nursery for more than 20 years, lost her battle with cancer in July.

Staff decided to dedicate their coffee morning to Barbara and raised £2118.30 after a £1000 donation from HSBC.

The nursery’s baby room was turned into a vintage tea room and there was a Great Kirky Bake-off for families and staff members.

Nursery manager Lisa Robb told the News: “Not only did we lose a colleague in Barbara but, more importantly, we lost a long-term friend.

“To this end we decided to hold our very own coffee morning to help raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“After weeks of collecting china and all things vintage we transformed our baby room into a very busy working tearoom. “Our staff team popped on their pinnies and off to work we all went. “As each family arrived they were met with a photo booth where we took some excellent family snaps.

“We had an Alice and Wonderland theme on the way to the baby room, with signs and dots leading the way.

“Our families and friends had kindly donated a tremendous amount of homebaked goods to put on each table.

“In addition to this we had a competition titled The Great Kirky Bake-off, judged by Linda Fabiani and Barbara’s husband Gary Stewart. Our children had been working hard to sell raffle tickets to families picking up and dropping off in the weeks leading up to the coffee morning and this turned out to be a huge success.

“For our prizes we had vouchers from local restaurants such as Spice, Zuccas and Tintos as well as excellent prizes donated from many families within the nursery.”
