Outing proved summit special for ramblers

-

Duncanrig Ramblers were in the Trossachs at the weekend where there was the choice of two walks.

The high walk started at the Ben A’ an car park and the group followed a new trail to the summit, after the old one was destroyed from harvesting of the mature forests in this area.

The views from the top were, all agreed, absolutely stunning.

Leaving the summit, the ramblers followed a narrow hill track over moorland to join a descending forest track which led towards Glen Finglas reservoir.

The reservoir is part of the Loch Katrine water complex which supplies Glasgow.

After leaving the forest the group headed down to the Glen Finglas Dam, following the dam road before joining a hill track, which had some great scenic views over Loch Venachar.

They then joined a section of the Great Trossachs Way path which led to the coach waiting at the Gen Finglas Visitor Centre car park.

The alternate walk started at Brig o’Turk, which means“bridge of the boar”.

Near the start of the walk there is remarkable tree, next to the former Smiddy of Brig o’Turk. The Bicycle Tree, which is also known as the metal-eating, or the iron tree, is a centuryold sycamore with a reputation for absorbing various objects hung there by the blacksmith, including an anchor and chain. It is said that a local boy called up to fight in the Great War left his bicycle next to the tree. When he failed to return the tree grew around the bicycle and today only parts remain visible protruding from the trunk.

After leaving the village, the group followed a lovely woodland walk before joining the Great Trossachs Way with its fine views over the Trossachs and a number of other lochs including Loch Venachar, at Kilmahog, the walkers then joined the Rob Roy Way and followed the old railway line into Callander and the waiting coach.

The ramblers then enjoyed a social break in Callander

The club’s next walk, on November 6,is in the Borders, and bookings will be taken at their meeting on October 31. Visitors are welcome.
