Shock win for Donald Trump in US election

EK has its say on Trump as President

- Nicola Findlay

Donald Trump stunned pollsters by becoming America’s next Presidentelect last Tuesday.

The polls had tipped Democrat Hillary Clinton to take the White House but the Republican was the first to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win the race for the presidency.

Mr Trump met outgoing president Barack Obama last week before he officially takes office in January. Former News reporter, Shona Mitchell, was in the US campaigning for Clinton in the final few weeks of the election campaign.

Following Mr Trump’s victory protests were held across the country with police having to break up some of them.

The News asked shoppers in East Kilbride for their reaction to the shock result.

Morag McIlwraith, from Calderwood, said: “I think time will tell what kind of President he will be – we will just have to wait and see.

“I think he definitely shocked a few people though.” But EK shopper, Sally Last, was more pessimistic saying: “I think it’s an awful result and it doesn’t bode well for the future.

“I would have rather seen Hillary Clinton in the White House.”

Meanwhile Jessie Carmichael, from Whitehills, said: “It’s a disaster and will have more of an impact than just in America.”

And Margaret McGready, from Westwood, said: “I didn’t want Trump to win but I have family in America who did.”
