Car park mix-up confuses motorists

Sign suggests closure plan

- Andrea O’Neill

Park-and-ride commuters in East Kilbride were driven round the bend.

And all because of a sign which appeared to announce a two-month closure of East Kilbride railway station car park.

The sign appeared to state that the car park would be closed from 11pm on Monday, November 7 until 8am on Friday, December 30.

This prompted complaints from fuming motorists last week.

Gemma Howard told the News: “Yet more problems for EK train commuters.

“Car park at train station closing tonight until end of December!

“Hairmyres doesn’t have the capacity for everyone to park there. Nightmare!”

However, the car park remained open for business which, in turn, baffled even more drivers.

The News contacted ScotRail to clear up the confusion.

They confirmed that there was a mix-up with the sign.

And they went on to explain that 20 spaces at the far end of the car park have been sectioned off until the end of December for overnight maintenance work.

A ScotRail Alliance spokesman said: “To allow contractors access to the track for maintenance work, a small number of parking spaces have been sectioned off until the end of December.

“We were made aware that the sign advising of the temporary closure was placed in the wrong location, causing confusion for some customers, which has now been moved to the correct location.”

News reader Martyn Shannon joked: “If it’s only closed at night they really need to fire whoever wrote the sign.”
