Ramblers finish Stirlingshire walks

- Kris Gromek

St Leonards Ramblers’ most recent outing was to Meikle Bin in Stirlingshire – a relatively small hill but one whose summit can be seen from around East Kilbride.

A previous attempt to climb the hill had been frustrated by snow, which had made access to the hill difficult and unsafe.

There was no such problem this time round, however, and both walks were successfully completed.

Both walks started at the same point at the western end of Loch Carron reservoir, and for more than the first mile, they followed the same route.

The low walkers then branched off to the east, to contour round the hill, joining the path along the shoreline near the end of the loch.

The high walkers continued to climb the hill until they had reached the summit at 1800ft.

From there, the normal path was buried under felled timber, and they had to negotiate a more difficult, steeper route which eventually delivered them at the car park at the eastern end of the loch.

They had climbed 1506ft and walked 8.5 miles. The low walkers had walked about six miles and had climbed 800ft.

Altogether, it had been a good walking day, which included some time spent in Kirkintilloch before the return to East Kilbride.

The next walk will take club members around the Mill of Chon in the Aberfoyle area.

Further information about the club and future walks can be had from the chairperson, Kris Gromek, on 07738 783431.
