Classy opening for brand new school
Pupils, staff and parents are delighted
The new multi-million pound Gilmourton Primary school celebrated its official opening earlier month.
Avondale councillor Margaret Cooper took the honours and unveiled the commemorative plaque outside the new facility, assisted by the school’s youngest and oldest pupils Eilidh McKinnon and Lewis Wright-Kerr.
The occasion was a chance for the children to showcase their learning as well as the things they love about their new school.
A quick Scottish history lesson was performed by the children, through the history of the Covenanters, and younger pupils sang ‘Red YoYo’, while the whole school sang the ‘Jeely Piece Song’.
Primary Four to Primary Seven pupils also played a “Scottish Medley” on instruments including xylophones, glockenspiels, guitar and accordion. Head teacher Ellen Jack said: “I was delighted to see so many familiar faces in the audience.
“The ceremony is the culmination of a great deal of hard work by staff and children to organise the programme and my thanks go to everyone involved.
“I think the children excelled with their performances, with many people on the day commenting how much they had enjoyed the event.”
Councillor Cooper added: “I was absolutely delighted to be asked to formally open Gilmourton Primary school and took great pleasure in seeing the learning and teaching that goes on this fabulous new building. A special thank you must go to the children of Gilmourton Primary school for putting on a show which they can be proud of. They are a credit to themselves, their parents and of course their school.”
The school was built part of South Lanarkshire Council’s £857million primary schools modernisation programme.
