Competition time at Speakers meeting

- Speakers Club

It was evaluation and topics competition time at the latest meeting of East Kilbride Speakers Club, chaired by Paul Munday.

Four competitors evaluated a speech delivered by David Webster that was based on his love of the cinema and in this instance he focused on the history and development of horror films and their legendary stars. The judges agreed that the best critique of David’s speech was given by Ewan McRobert.

The best impromptu response to topics presented by Chris Smyth was judged to be that delivered by Bob Hunter.

Two speeches were delivered to supplement the programme.

Betty Sneddon, who originates from Yorkshire, gave a fascinating account of the differences she found between Yorkshire and Scotland relating to Hallowe’en and Guy Fawkes night; with Hallowe’en given priority in Scotland and bonfire night in Yorkshire.

She questioned whether the loss of this difference over the years is a good thing.

Isobel Dunlop followed with a speech that was both amusing and thought-provoking when she spoke of her working life as school teacher and the changes she experienced from the start of her career until she retired from the profession.

Good advice on the content of the meeting was given by Ken Murray in his general evaluation.

The next meeting of the club will take place tomorrow and details can be obtained from secretary Paul Munday on 01355 223894.
