Colliers rock Renfrew

-

South Lanarkshire Colliers under-16’s maintained their 100 per cent record in the Strathclyde Baksetball League with a 79-63 victory over Renfrew Rocks.

After a poor first quarter left the Colliers trailing 15–10 due to poor defence, under 14 players Adam Walsh and David Gordon checked into the game to boost the tempo of play.

This saw a change in momentum as the Colliers cranked up the intensity on both defence and offense, resulting in many easy scores.

Colliers’ defence improved drastically in the second quarter committing only two fouls, which saw them finish the half with a four-point lead thanks to some great scoring from captain Jamie Orr.

And that momentum continued into the third, with high tempo defence from Deen Ahmed leading to many turnovers from Renfrew and Colliers notching some fast break away layups.

Colliers raced into a 24-point lead, allowing U14 stars Stephen McGarrie and Stuart MacKinnon to check in for the first time in the game.

As the third quarter came to a close Renfrew began to pull back the lead , but Colliers managed to push on in the final period to win by 16 points.

Coach Grahame Miller said: “The guys put in a good team effort in order to get the win.

“They are coming together as a team and I’m looking forward to seeing how we progress in the coming weeks.”
