Kilby in running for club of the year

-

East Kilbride FC have been nominated for the Local Club of the Year prize at next month’s Sunday Mail sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards.

The awards night, which recognises excellence throughout Scottish sports by awarding our sportsmen, women and teams for their outstanding achievements, will be held at the Doubletree by Hilton Glasgow Central hotel on Thursday, December 1.

Kilby have been put forward for consideration after a memorable year.

The Lowland League team sent the town football crazy when they played Celtic in the Scottish Cup last season, with the game shown live on TV.

They may have lost 2-0 in a match that captured the imagination of the whole country.

But they were champions as far as the East Kilbride and District Dementia Carers’Group was concerned, as they raised £1500 for the charity. CommunityChildren

Kilby chairman Mark Horner said: “The East Kilbride and District Dementia Carers’Group is very close to our hearts, and is just one of the local groups to have benefitted from the Scottish Cup run last season.

“As a proud community club, we will always aim to ensure that benefits of our successes can be shared throughout the town.”

Members of the community walked out with the team on matchday bringing joy to the coaches and youngsters involved in the youth teams.

Denise Laverty has worked hard to get the Sunday Club up and running for children with additional support needs and their parents to come together every week to play football.

This helps with the children’s communication skills and confidence and families are all feeling the benefits of the Sunday sessions.

The Local Club of the Year Award is sponsored by sportscotland, the national agency for sport, and Stewart Harris, chief executive of sportscotland, said:“Sports clubs play a key role in delivering sporting opportunities within communities and helping aspiring young participants and athletes develop and learn.

“These local organisations underpin Scotland’s world class sporting system and I am delighted to see East Kilbride FC nominated for the Local Club of the Year Award.

“The way they support local causes is a great example to other community clubs across Scotland.”

The shortlist for the awards will be announced in the Sunday Mail this weekend.
