Man snared in visit

- Andrea O’Neill

A sex offender was caught with vile images of child abuse on his mobile phone during a routine police visit.

Depraved Joseph McNaughton, 25, was caught red-handed with indecent images of children at his home in Ivanhoe, Calderwood, on May 6.

Fiscal depute Callum Forsyth told the court police officers making a routine visit asked permission to view his iPhone.

“They observed indecent images of juvenile males”, said Mr Forsyth.

“A search warrant was granted and officers went over the contents of the seized phone with the accused.

“He was detained and taken to Motherwell Police Office where he was interviewed and gave no comment.”

McNaughton was subsequently charged and gave no reply.

The court heard four indecent still images – two at category B and two at category C – were found on the device which were easily accessible.

The images were all of male children.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard how the pervert was jailed for three years in January 2011 for lewd, indecent and libidinous behaviour offences committed the previous year.

On Friday, Sheriff Ray Small deferred sentence until December 14 for reports including a restriction of liberty order review and a risk assessment to gauge McNaughton’s danger to the public.

He will remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register meantime. Champion chatters
