Mamta looks to future
A former toy engineer from East Kilbride is inspiring the next generation of whizzkids – by investigating how the superpowers of the nation’s favourite heroes could become a reality.
Mamta Singhal, originally from Stewartfield, along with a team of top-class engineers, examined how advances in engineering and technology could one day replicate Spider-Man’s web-throwing capability, the Batmobile or create cloaks of invisibility.
As part of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, Mamta and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) took to Twitter to answer an influx of questions from superhero fans of all ages.
The IET has shared the top questions from the session, including: ‘Is it possible to create regenerative power like Wolverine?’, ‘Are we any closer to actually making a real Ironman suit?,’ and ‘Would humans ever be able to understand all languages like Wonder Woman?’
Mamta told the News: “It was great fun answering parents and kids’ questions about superhero powers and looking at how some superhero abilities could become more of a reality through advances in engineering and technology.
“There is a serious message and wider point, however, which is that we continue to inspire the next generation of engineers to ensure that local businesses continue to thrive and innovate.
“We need to ensure that more young people, especially girls, understand the creative and varied jobs available in our sector.”
Award-winning Mamta, 35, has played a central role in increasing the profile of women in engineering.
She brushed shoulders with ministers in the House of Commons and attended a Women in Enterprise debate in the Houses of Parliament.
