Cambria catch YM cold

-

East Kilbride YM lost their second league game of the season on Saturday after being forced to play Cambria at short notice.

YM’s West of Scotland Cup tie away to Fenwick Thistle on Saturday was postponed on Friday at 3pm due to adverse weather.

At 9pm on Friday night YM were instructed to travel to Cambria for a noon kick-off on Saturday and Graeme Robertson’s men were caught cold as they lost out by a single goal.

YM tested Cambria keeper Mowat early on and at the other end YM keeper Fraser Campbell was seeing plenty of action which he, too, dealt with.

What followed was a passage of play that was error strewn as both sides struggled to produce cohesive moves.

Approaching half time Cambria threatened when Walker’s header came crashing back off the crossbar for MacIver to shoot goal wards, but Campbell saved at the expense of a corner.

On the half-time whistle, James Cameron’s shot was heading into the top corner but Mowat somehow got his hand to it to keep Cambria on level terms.

The second half started in a hail storm which did nothing to help the players but, after it passed, Cambria took the lead when a shot from left winger MacIver deflected off a YM defender into the net.

This brought a bit of life to the game as YM chased an equaliser but Cambria looked dangerous on the break.

YM pushed Cambria back late in the game and a delightful back heel from Craig Tocher put Ross McDonagh through on goal, only for Mowat to deny him with a good save.

John Griffen’s shot hit the crossbar and then his header shaved the upright in the final moments as YM missed out on an equaliser.

This Saturday YM should be travelling to play Fenwick in their re-arranged cup match.

Meanwhile, one bit of good news for YM was that their striker Connor McCann played for the Caledonian League Select side that defeated Glasgow Colleges AFA in the first round of the SAFA Inter League competition on Sunday.

Elsewhere, YM’s Scottish Amateur side recorded a fine 4-2 victory at Houston.

Barry Kelly scored a hat-trick, while Lee Alexander completed the scoring forYM.
