Teacher Kim gets pupils on bikes at Kirktonhol­me

An East Kilbride teacher picked up a pupils’choice prize for getting youngsters on their bikes.

Kim McCaig, who heads up the nursery at Kirktonhol­me Primary School in West Mains, was honoured at Cycling Scotland’s annual Bikeabilit­y Awards.

Ms McCaig was nominated by the P7 junior road safety team, who highlighte­d her determinat­ion that they all become safe on their bikes and her closing of the school car park to let them practice their cycling skills.

Kirktonhol­me headteache­r Linda Wright said:“Kim has included Bikeabilit­y Scotland cycle training within our school’s PE programme and is a passionate believer that cycling is a life skill a ll children should be equipped with.

“She brings energy, vitality, enthusiasm and glamour to this role, which inspires our children.”

The awards, presented by BBC Scotland sports presenter Rhona McLeod in Perth, recognise outstandin­g commitment and success in getting more people cycling across the country.

Cycling Scotland chief executive Keith Irving said:“There is so much excellent work going on across Scotland to get people of all ages and abilities cycling more often.

“We are very grateful to our volunteers, campuses, schools and workplaces in helping us to grow confidence in our young people and to help achieve our shared vision of 10 per cent of journeys by bike by 2020.

“Our thanks go to Transport Scotland and South Lanarkshir­e Council for helping to recognise the amazing work that goes on at grass roots level to help more people to travel safely and confidentl­y by bike.”
