Don’t fall victim to cold calling scammers

-

My officers and I want to do all we can to ensure residents don’t become victims of fraud.

I would encourage anyone who has a vulnerable family member or friend to make them aware of possible scams.

Please be aware that cold callers can appear very plausible and are always good at convincing you that their business is legit which make it difficult to tell straight way if what you are being offered is a scam.

Be mindful that they will try to fool you into believing that you are speaking with the representative of a trusted company or agency.

Remember if it appears too good to be true it probably is.

You should never engage in conversation with any cold callers.

Immediately hang up your phone and do not provide the caller with any of your personal details.

You should never disclose your pin number or bank details to anyone.

If you think you have been the victim of this type of fraud please speak to a family member of friend or contact the Citizens Advice Bureau immediately on (01355) 263698 who can advise you if you require to report this matter to police.

If you would like more advice on telephone scams please visit the Citizens Advice Bureau website https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ scotland/ or attend at the East Kilbride office in the town centre.

Finally, I want the residents of East Kilbride and Strathaven to make sure they are drinking responsibly and that they get themselves home safely from nights out this festive season.

Where possible, pre book a taxi through a licensed company or arrange for a family member or friend to pick you up.
