THE SEASON OF GOODWILL

Provost Logan sends good wishes

- Eileen Logan

Christmas is always a lovely time of the year that so many of us look forward to.

It is also a great chance to spread some cheer and goodwill amongst family, friends and anyone less fortunate than ourselves.

In my role as Provost, I get to meet so many people who volunteer a lot of their own time to help and support the most needy and vulnerable people in our communities.

Without volunteers, our area would be a lot worse off.

And at Christmas, the work of our volunteers is invaluable to help make sure everyone’s life is made that little bit better.

The spirit of Christmas has changed dramatically over the years with the commercialisation of the season now very much a dominating part.

But you only need to look behind all that to see the real meaning of Christmas is still very much to the fore.

Just ask our school pupils and check out the many church nativity events still going strong.

And there are many people out there who put their own celebrations into second place, organising Christmas shows and parties for people less fortunate than themselves – reminding us all that goodwill to all still has more meaning than presents and gifts.

Spreading happiness around is a gift we all like to receive.

But sharing that joy is something we could all do more of, especially at this time of year. So, as I look forward to 2017 and all the expectations I have for the coming year, I also look back at all the many wonderful people I have met across South Lanarkshire who make our area a better place to be, not just at Christmas but all year round.

Have a very Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year when it comes.
